The Founder/Chairman of IADRF
Dr. Ronald E. Henderson has a background that includes:
  • His knowledge as a longtime physician

  • His administrative experience as a businessman, chief executive officer, and founder or cofounder of several health-related entities

  • His insights and commitment as a patient who was diagnosed several years ago with an autoimmune disease

An obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Henderson was the founder and longtime chief executive officer of Henderson & Walton Women's Center in Birmingham, Alabama, which he led to become the largest freestanding obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) practice of its type in the nation. Dr. Henderson served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jefferson County (Alabama) Medical Society, president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and a member of the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association.
As a member of the governing board for Alabama's public health system, he was instrumental in reorganizing the Alabama Department of Public Health. He was a cofounder of a professional liability insurance company (Mutual Assurance Society of Alabama, now ProAssurance on the New York Stock Exchange) and a cofounder of one of the first freestanding surgery centers in the Southeast (Birmingham Surgical Center, more recently known as HealthSouth Outpatient CareCenter).
In 1985, he founded a health maintenance organization (Southeast Health Plan); and in 1992, he founded a physician practice management company (MediSphere Corporation, Inc., more recently known as MediSphere Health Partners, Inc.).
When Dr. Henderson was establishing IADRF in 2002, he also was putting the finishing touches on a book he wrote on his own autoimmune disease experience and his plans for IADRF. The book is Attacking Myasthenia Gravis: A Key in the Battle Against Autoimmune Diseases
