IADRF has associated itself with
the cutting edge of progressive immune related research by working
closely with clinical scientists
who are members of the distinguished organization known as the
Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies, or FOCIS.
IADRF's approach is to focus on the "big research picture" of
autoimmune and immune-mediated disorders. This broad-based approach
is geared toward attacking a wide range of autoimmune and immune-mediated
disorders, rather than focusing on these health problems one by
one.
The theory behind IADRF's big research picture approach is that
there are many common denominators to various autoimmune and immune-mediated
disorders. It is the IADRF belief that if researchers can unlock
major keys concerning one of these immune-related health problems,
there likely will be spin-offs to solving problems with another
immune-related disorder, or perhaps several immune-related disorders.
Collaboration: the IADRF Approach
To take an approach of addressing the big research picture of autoimmune
and immune-mediated disorders, IADRF has a philosophy of interacting
with researchers, foundations, philanthropists, and other interested
parties with a policy of sharing, inclusion rather than exclusion,
and cooperation
and collaboration.
Instead of focusing on one autoimmune or immune-mediated problem
as an island, IADRF is structured to operate much like a group
of closely related islands representing various immune system disorders.
The concept calls for all these islands to work together and exchange
information aimed toward new knowledge, new treatments, and new
cures.
It is a central part of the IADRF plan to incorporate the experience
and expertise of FOCIS members into the IADRF grant review process.
This is a process for appropriate allocation of research funds
to the most promising immune-related research projects.
FOCIS brings together into one organization internationally recognized
scientists who also are affiliated with other leading scientific
societies. Scientists who are members of FOCIS represent various
specialties of medicine and scientific endeavor. All of them share
a common bond in that they are involved in research related to
various autoimmune or immune-mediated disorders. Members of FOCIS
are affiliated with premier institutions around the nation.
Institutions in which FOCIS members hold faculty appointments include,
but are not limited to, the following:
•
Harvard Medical School
•
Stanford University School of Medicine
•
Baylor College of Medicine
•
The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
•
The University of Colorado Medical Center
•
Mayo Clinic
•
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation
•
The University of Iowa
•
The University of Alabama School of Medicine at the University
of
Alabama at Birmingham. |

One of the primary goals of FOCIS is to serve
as a catalyst to establish Centers of Clinical
Immunology that will be based at centers of excellence located at major
universities. |
